Narrative
Baptized by Rev John TUCKER D. D. Commenced business in Newburyport with ample
means. In 1775 moved for better security in war time to Haverhill where his
father-in-law resided. With Nathaniel SALTONSTALL Esq and others established
the first Fire Club (later Department). In 1781 moved to Boston where he sold
English and other European goods. Later moved to Leicester and purchased the
Mt Pleasant place, where he continued business. See Ex-Gov WASHBURNE's History
of Leicester where it is "an elegant seat of 220 acres, 55 miles from Boston".
