He was accidentally killed. "He was formerly a prominent merchant of
Cincinnati, O; for some years past one of the most active, enterprising men
of Southern Illinois, and an extensive pork dealer at Shawneetown, and on the
Wabash River; of great energy of character, untiring perseverance, and an
enlarged benevolence. Not only his relatives and friends, but the community
in which his lot was cast, have sustained a loss of no ordinary character."
