He was born at Columbian Mines, Crittenden Co, Kentucky; graduated, 1867, at
the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md, as one of the first five in his class.
He sailed in the "Franklin" and was, 1868, in the Mediterranean Squadron,
having been promoted to Ensign.
