Narrative
				He was "for 11 years on board a merchant ship; sailed to a good many parts of
				the world. When war broke out, joined the US Navy, Oct 1861, served 4 years,
				5 mos. Worked from Mate to Acting-Master, in command at different times of 2
				US gunboats on the southern coast; was off Charleston in most all the attacks
				on the city, and was 12 mos attached to those iron clads, and helped bombard
				Sumter for 3 weeels, daily." He was living, 1868, in Rockport, Mass.
